About the Journal

Journal Food Systems and Security (JFSS) is an international, interdisciplinary journal dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the complex interactions, processes, and transformations that shape food systems and their implications for food and nutrition security, environmental sustainability, human health, livelihoods, and societal resilience. JFSS was established in recognition of the growing need for integrative and systems-oriented approaches to addressing contemporary global food challenges. Rapid environmental change, climate variability, biodiversity loss, demographic shifts, geopolitical instability, emerging health risks, resource constraints, market disruptions, and expanding social inequalities are increasingly reshaping how food is produced, distributed, consumed, governed, and sustained across scales ranging from the local to the global. Concurrently, scientific knowledge relevant to food systems has rapidly expanded across agricultural, biological, environmental, nutritional, technological, economic, social, and policy disciplines.

JFSS provides a platform that connects these diverse areas of scholarship within a coherent food systems framework, supporting evidence-based pathways toward resilient, equitable, and sustainable food futures. JFSS adopts a comprehensive view of food systems, including the full continuum of activities, actors, and processes involved in the production, processing, distribution, trade, consumption, and recovery of food, feed and bio-based resources. Additionally, JFSS considers environmental, institutional, technological, economic, political, cultural, and behavioural contexts that influence the performance and outcomes of these systems.

The Journal of Food Systems and Security aims to publish high-quality, innovative, and policy-relevant research that advances understanding of the drivers, dynamics, vulnerabilities, resilience, governance, and transformation of food systems under conditions of global change. The journal seeks to: strengthen interdisciplinary food systems science; promote rigorous and evidence-based debate on food systems transformation; advance sustainable and resilient approaches to food and nutrition security; bridge science, policy, innovation, and practice; and support integrative solutions that balance productivity, environmental sustainability, economic viability, public health, and social equity. JFSS encourages research that examines interactions, trade-offs, synergies, and feedback across food systems, recognizing that food security outcomes are shaped by interconnected ecological, technological, economic, political, and societal processes. JFSS accepts interdisciplinary and systems-based studies and welcomes high-quality disciplinary research where findings have broader implications for food systems performance, resilience, sustainability, or security.

The Journal of Food Systems and Security serves as a global platform for researchers, academics, development practitioners, policy makers, international organizations, industry stakeholders, and civil society actors working to advance sustainable, resilient, equitable, and secure food systems globally.

JFSS operates a continuous publication model. Articles are published online immediately after acceptance, production, and author proof approval. The journal publishes articles continuously and compiles them into annual volumes.
